Happy Birthday to Me

So it’s that day of the year I get to celebrate being a year older. Whopee… 🙄 But as my dad says, “You want to be another year older or you want the pine box?” Okay, put like that, another year older sounds great. 😆

As a birthday present, the lovely people at Amazon.com have made my second Doomsday Brethren title, SEDUCE ME IN SHADOW, available for pre-order! The book is out September 29, but you can make sure you don’t miss the next adventure now! If you haven’t started the series yet, TEMPT ME WITH DARKNESS, the first of the Doomsday Brethren titles, is out now!

Other than that, I’ll be writing today. Still trying to finish Doomsday Brethren 3, POSSESS ME AT MIDNIGHT. And I’ll be sticking near my phone. My father-in-law has been in critical condition for nearly a week. I’m hoping we see improvement soon, but every day seems to be something different. Then tonight, looks like we’ll be going to the local hibachi place for dinner. Weather is nasty today, so we’ll just have to see.

In the meantime, here’s a little something I can share with you. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas Eve!

I’ve been traveling and am now fighting off a lovely holiday cold, so I am a woman of few words today. But I would like to take the time to wish everyone a great holiday season and a wonderful 2009! I’m very grateful for all the bounties of 2008 and hope my readers enjoyed my releases this year. I think you’ll be happy with next year’s releases.

And in case  you wanted to bypass the heartfelt sentiments, just crawl on Santa’s lap and tell him what you REALLY want.

Come to think of it, I’m sure I have a last minute request or two… Have a wonderful holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving

For those in the US, Thanksgiving is just a day away. I ran across the other day and though it was too hysterical not to share… Enjoy!

18 Things you can say only at Thanksgiving
1. Talk about a huge breast!

2. Tying the legs together keeps the inside moist.

3. It’s Cool Whip time!

4. If I don’t undo my pants, I’ll burst!

5. That’s one terrific spread!

6. I’m in the mood for a little dark meat.

7. Are you ready for seconds yet?

8. It’s a little dry, do you still want to eat it?

9. Just wait your turn, you’ll get some!

10. Don’t play with your meat.

11. Just spread the legs open and stuff it in.

12. Do you think you’ll be able to handle all these people at once?

13. I didn’t expect everyone to come at once!

14. You still have a little bit on your chin.

15. How long will it take after you stick it in?

16. You’ll know it’s ready when it pops up.

17. Wow, I didn’t think I could handle all of that!

18. That’s the biggest one I’ve ever seen!

Everyone have a great Turkey day. Even with all the economic upheaval these days, I still have a lot to be thankful for, and when times aren’t their best, it’s great to focus on what you DO have. At least that’s my mission tomorrow, along with enjoying my friends and connecting with family, who couldn’t make the trip. I hope you’re surrounded by friends and family and good things tomorrow too!

Crazy Time!

So I’m smack dab in the middle of several things – The biggest thing is that Undercover, my futuristic, menage, erotic romance will be releasing from Berkley Heat December 2. So I’m running toward the street date, trying not to freak that I haven’t done enough, trying not to check my amazon and barnes and noble rankings every three minutes and trying not to fall into the pit of “ONOES! WILL I SELL ANY BOOKS!” But when I get a bit freaked, I can happily check out some of my early reviews and know at least a few people will enjoy Undercover (here are a few because it makes me smile) –

Top Pick from RT Booklovers! Dane has written a sizzling, delicious tale of love lost, found and expanded. The M/F/M triad is as endearing as it is molten hot. The friction between Sera and Ash as they resolve their past is intense, and with Brandt added to the mix, it’s nothing short of explosive. An adrenaline-filled, suspenseful subplot keeps the reader engaged.

Mandy at Fresh Fiction says: UNDERCOVER is a hot, sexy and action-packed piece of writing that will keep you glued to every page wondering what will happen next. A fabulous read!

Chrissy at Romance Junkies gives UNDERCOVER Five Blue Ribbons: Wow! This book rocks! Lauren Dane pulls out all the stops with this soul searing, awe-inspiring read.

Second and third – I’ve got two other books coming out between November 25 and December 23 – Holiday Seduction with Jaci Burton featuring her story Unwrapped and my To Do List coming out in trade paper on November 25 and Sweet Charity, the digital follow up to To Do List, coming out from Samhain on December 23.

Around the periphery of that I’m finishing up Always, a contemporary romance for Samhain, getting ready to start No Reservations, which I’m co-writing with Megan Hart as a follow up to March’s Taking Care of Business and waiting to hear back on several pitches my agent has out.

Oh and my kids are out of school like every other day and that doesn’t count all the short days they’ve got for conference week and holidays. It’s crazy.

At the same time, every last bit of it is important and wonderful and something I worked hard for and will always remember (well except those half days when I can’t get any work done, LOL).  So things might be busy and crazy but I’m sooo thankful for every book I can write and sell, every time I get a note from a reader or a bookstore who’s enjoyed my writing, for seeing the finished product and knowing I was blessed enough to find a home for it.

So life is busy, yes, but it’s filled with wonderful things and believe you me, I’ll have plenty of things to list next Thursday as we sit around the table and get ready to dig into the turkey (picked it up today so that’s done, yay!).

I hope you’re all having a wonderful autumn filled with blessings big and small.

PS – Don’t forget to check out my blog from now until December 2! I’m giving away books every single day as well as a pretty nifty grand prize.

To Plot or Not to Plot

I’ve published over forty works from short stories to full-length novels, and I can tell you that dreaming up the next shiny, sparkly story never gets easier. It’s not that I can’t come up with ideas. Ideas come from everywhere. They can start from a snippet of a conversation from my mother, my daughter, the stranger in the booth behind me, a television show that’s playing in the background, or a dream.

For the most part, the snippet inspires a flash of inspiration that starts the question “What if…?” Soon, I’m seeing a scene play in my mind’s eye—usually only the opening of a story. I wake up and turn on the bedside lamp and grab my notebook, or turn down the television and reach for the four-year-old’s Dora coloring book, or raise a finger to stop my companion from speaking for a second and grab the tape recorder in my purse.

I have hundreds of these little teaser scenes in scribbled notes. Most never make it past that light bulb flash because I can’t figure out what comes next. Or the “next” that I see isn’t something anyone’s gonna want to read. But a few do.

Those few get nurtured in my imagination, are given voices that sound off in my head, and don’t stop talking until I finish telling their story.

Most times they lead me by the hand or nag me to death until I reach “The End.” Sometimes, I get to the middle of the book and have a real “WTF?” moment because I’m painted into a corner.

I’m there now with my current work-in-progress. And for the first time since I was a very newbie writer, I’m pulling out the “Writing for Dummies” books to figure out why I’m stuck. I think it’s because I don’t have enough conflict and don’t understand what my character’s real, deep-down goals are. I know I’ll figure it out. I always do—usually when I’m sweating the deadline—but I would love, for once, not to have to depend on adrenaline to feel the plot vibe.

So, be thinking about me today. I’ll be pouring over my plotting spreadsheet (blech!) and filling in the blanks of the things I know and staring at the white space for all things I don’t. Did I mention I hate plotting? That it’s as painful as a root canal to me? My hero and heroine don’t even share the same dimension until a third of the way into the book—do you think that might be the problem? And she’s having a hot affair with a demon for whom I’m feeling more compassion, more horny lust than the hero. *sigh*

If any of you have any great ideas for finding the missing spark in a romance story (keep in mind it’s a dark, erotic paranormal)—I’m ready to try anything short of being tasered. 🙂

Down in Texas

Nuff said? It’s out today.

Here’s what the book is all about…

Down in Texas, there’s a little town in Texas called Honkytonk, where the women get exactly what they want…and the men know just how to give it to them.

Wearing His Brand
Lyssa McDonough just got tangled up in a coil of barbed wire, and her clothes are ripped to shreds. Rancher Brandon Tynan to the rescue—but why is she so ornery? Could it be that the whole state of Texas isn’t big enough for the two of them? Hell, they’ll still have to share one horse to get home, Lyssa better hang on tight—she’s in for the wildest ride of her life…

Slow Ride
Maggie Dermott doesn’t know the first thing about horses and Daniel Tynan is more than willing to show her the ropes. His gentle ways melt her heart and his sensual passion burns away her inhibitions. Daniel takes the time to love her right.

Straight Up Soldier
Suki Reece needs protection and she can see that Mac McDonough has the muscle. Too bad he can’t stand taking orders from a woman. The rugged ex-Marine won’t listen to a word she says until Suki distracts him with a sexy striptease. That gets his attention. Suki may have gotten the upper hand but Mac is going to be on top…

And here’s what people are saying about it…

“…HOT! HOT! HOT!…All I wanted was more, so I read DOWN IN TEXAS again, enjoying it for a second time…DOWN IN TEXAS is now a book in my permanent re-read pile…”

THE LADY AND THE DRAGON – Print Release

The Lady and The Dragon cover

I’m super excited to share the print release of THE LADY AND THE DRAGON with you because this year, I celebrated my 10th anniversary as a published author. I couldn’t think of a better way than to reissue my first published book ever. I updated it and added a little spice specifically for the Samhain release. This has always been one of my favorite stories.

A Runaway Heiress
Lady Christina Delafield was as bold as she was beautiful. When her overbearing grandfather threatened to tame her in a Swiss finishing school, Christina stowed away on the first ship leaving London harbor, determined to make her own way in life. But the mysterious captain of the Dragon’s Lair was a seductive reason to relinquish her independence–and embrace desire.

A Gentleman Pirate
Drexell Cain had lived for four years as the merciless Black Dragon, the scourge of the seas. Bent on rescuing his brother from the British Navy, Drex would do anything to return him to his wife and son in Louisiana–even kidnap the Lord Admiral’s granddaughter for ransom. A lovely blonde stowaway was an unexpected complication, until he discovered her real identity–and her passionate claim on his lonely heart.

Shelley Bradley weaves a suspenseful tale with a wonderfully complicated plot that kept me reading long after midnight. The characters were vividly real and their interaction with each other very entertaining. Rife with subplots and antagonists, this is a story that stays with the reader long after they have finished the book. Her story is passionately romantic and gripping. If you want to read a novel that picks you up and sweeps you away into another world as real as any, then THE LADY AND THE DRAGON is one not to be missed.” ~ Historical Romance Club

It’s currently available at MBAM, Amazon.com, B&N.com and Borders.com. Some are either showing the old cover or no cover, but the book is the same.

I hope you enjoy!

What Do You Like in a Hero?

Let’s talk men!

nakedman

Writers and readers alike get into discussions (sometimes) heated about the greatest romance heroes of all time or their favorites. They argue about what constitutes a great hero. There are huge differences of opinion.

I hear from readers and authors who like a tender man: supportive, emotionally available, gentle, not afraid to show affection, the “strong, silent type.” This is a good man, a solid man, loyal, dependable, committed. He’s there for the long haul, understands you and will got the extra mile to make you happy. In real life, I live with this man–and he’s wonderful. I’ve also written him into Marrok, who is the hero of my first Doomsday Brethren paranormal romance, Tempt Me With Darkness, which released August 26, 2008 from Pocket Books. Another Brethren member, Ice, falls into this category, as well. And Luc from my Berkley Heat erotic release, Decadent.

Some people like the smart ass/bad boy: ever-ready with a smart-alek comeback or a wicked innuendo, he’s quick and clever…and slightly unattainable. You never quite know what’s under the surface, and getting past his facade takes a tenacious woman. Getting him to be serious about anything–especially you–won’t be easy. It will be entertaining, frustrating, exhilirating–and just about any other “ing” you can think of. Another of my Doomsday Brethren, which you’ll meet in Tempt Me With Darkness, falls into this category. Bram is one sharp-tongued devil, master puppeteer, and sexy-as-all-get-out British bad boy wizard… Also Thorn from Dangerous Boys and Their Toy. He’s ALWAYS got a comeback.

I’m personally fond of a hero type you don’t see often: the thinker/scientist. This guy is brilliant with a capital B. His mind is a mysterious and ever-changing place. He’s deep and his mental energy is boundless. He’s often distracted by things that have nothing to do with you, but when he focuses on you… *shiver* He has a dry wit, and once focused on your relationship, will view it with profound depth. He proves that brains are sexy! Duke, another of my Doomsday Brethren, falls into this category. I think his understated sexiness is totally yummy.

Then we have the hero I like to call “the guy”: he’s all about sports and having beers with his buddies. He’s not a skirt-chaser, per se…but he’s not at all adverse to catching what’s underneath. He can be a surprisingly elusive bachelor. He’s not against relationships; they just aren’t for him. He’s got a full life: work, friends, sports, extended family. Why add a wife to the mix? At a glance, he might seem like more trouble than he’s worth. But you’ll have fun with him. He’ll introduce you to activities and people you would have never met otherwise. He definitely digs woman, and once he realizes he’s into you, he’ll find some pleasurable ways to show you. I’m writing this man now in Mitch MacKinnon, who appears in latest Samhain release, A Perfect Match. He amuses me all the time! And Doomsday Brethren member Caden also falls into this category.

Another major hero type you see: Tortured Alpha male. Some readers loathe him. He comes with baggage, doesn’t trust easily, has a thousand reasons not to let you into his life or heart. He’s difficult and cynical. He can be argumentative…and find arguments stimulating. He’s pushy and aggressive and sexual and difficult and will, at times, make you tear your hair out and cry all at once. Personally, I love this guy. But I’m the kind of woman who likes a challenge. I can give as good as I get, and I’d sometimes rather be challenged than coddled. The women who like this hero want to be the one who “tames” him. Dangerous? Yes. Danger is this guy’s middle name. He’s intense…both in and out of bed. Once he’s determined to get his hands on you, you don’t stand a chance. And aren’t you glad? Once you get under that remote facade, however, is the heart of a man who will be forever yours. That always makes me close the book with a sigh. Several of my Doomsday Brethren fall into this category: Shock and Lucan, for sure. Ice has shades of this, as well. Definitely Deke from Decadent and Jack from Wicked Ties. The intensity of this type of man is something I just can’t resist!

You may be able to think of more heroe types. Whatever hero you like, that’s the great thing about romance–there’s a book, and a hero, for every type of reader. Go forth and read!

Furry presents

This morning, not too long after I woke up, when I was still suffering from pre-coffee morning brain, I heard my son squealing (he’s only 8, he’s still allowed to squeal) from downstairs. I couldn’t tell if it was a “yay” squeal, or an “I cut off a body part” squeal, so worry-mode kicked in. But before I could get downstairs I heard the loud thumps of my son racing up the stairs. Since he was running, I assumed he wasn’t at death’s door, and I met him at the top of the stairs as he yelled, “Mommy, kitties!”

When my hubby backed out of the driveway this morning to go to work, he was met with a surprising sight in front of his car. Five little kitties, sleeping in a huddle. Hubby’s face was pale white–the first thing he said to me when I made it outside was, “I could have run over them. I had no idea they were there.” The little things were shivering in the cold, so I grabbed a box and one of my son’s old blankets and put the little ones inside to warm up. I know the momma and daddy kitties–they’re wild cats in the neighborhood we leave food out for–but we haven’t been able to capture them to take them in to get fixed. I’d thought I’d be able to leave the kittens in the box on my front porch, but as soon as I came inside, the momma kitty came up and took one of the kitties away–this time back under my car. Since I’m terrified these kittens are going to end up road kill, or coyote food, which happens all too often in my neighborhood (and is what happened to the two kittens this momma kitty had previously), I brought all five kittens into the house, where they’re currently camped out in my bathtub. I bought some catmilk at the grocery store–which all five kittens have sampled–and they seem to be doing okay. Momma kitty just glares at me when I go outside–which makes me feel a little guilty–but better Momma kitty be mad at me but her kittens safe and alive, then the alternative.

So here’s the five new members of my family. My sister’s already claimed one, and I’ll probably keep one, but I’ll be looking for homes for the other three.

Aren’t they adorable? Guess how I’ll be spending my day today? Yup, playing with kitties…
